Rowville is to the east of the centre of Melbourne, about 25 km from the city centre. It can be reached by car, train and bus in 30-40 minutes depending on the trafffic and method used. It is a new, modern area with many large and new houses with open space, gardens, trees and parkland. Our students and families do not need to go into the centre of Melbourne very much at all as shops, restaurants, cinemas and spread through out the suburban areas. One popular place for our students is Knox City Shopping Centre with department stores, restaurants, cinemas and many shops. Families can drive there or students can take one bus which runs every 15 minutes.
December saw the start of our summer. The climate is seasonal but can also be quite variable - Melbourne is famous for having 'four seasons in one day" on some occasions. Summer has an average of about 25oC temperature but it can be much hotter on some days. Each summer we have about 5 days when the temperature is over 40, but it does not last for too long before it changes. The cooler days are in the low 20s. We have had very low rainfall for a number of years and there are water shortages across the state and restrictions and what water can be used for and we are all encouraged to reduce the amount of water we use - for example keep showers to 4 minutes. In our winter (May to July) we do not receive any snow but sometimes in the mountains about 1 hour from the city there are some light snowfalls. To get deeper snow and ski you need to travel about 3 hours out of Melbourne centre. The average temperature in winter is about 14 or 15oC although it can be down to 12 or even 8 on very cold days and reach 0 on a couple of very cold nights.
